A Study for its Applicability to Kindergarten Children in Korea through Montessori Method

Abstract
The present study was attempted to review Montessori Method for language development and explore its applicability to Korean kindergarten children. The adapted Korean version_ and Montessori material was field experimented with children in Woon Hyun kindergarten for 3 years and its refinements were made during the period whenever inadequacies were identified. The general scheme of the research is, therefore, action-oriented. However, intensive-longitudinal case observations were supplemented with selected eight children. in order to obtain systemic and developmental data.
The results of the field observations are summarized as follows;
First, the Korean-version Montessori program is proved to be both effective and efficient in developing writing and reading skills of Korean kindergarten children as long as teachers are equipped with adequate theoritical basis of and experience with the program.
Second, Montessori principles of language development are relevant and applicable to. Korean language education for children even under the current Korean kindergarten system.
Third, the supplementary use of person-to-person verbal interaction approach in parallel with the original Montessori program is more effective than when the latter program alone is applied. The former program, that is, person-to-person verbal communication is particularly facilitative of listening and verbal expression skills, and also teacher-children interpersonal intimacy.
Fourth, the Korean-version Montessori program seems to be applicable to both first and. second year kindergarten children. Furthermore, it is suggested from the study that the: program use could be extended to the children in the lower age without modification of the program. A corollary implication of the above observation is that the starting age of kindergarten education need to be lowered to 3 years of age.
